Satan's Fingers mixing

Happy to announce that I've just finished mixing the new Satan's Fingers full length album. In case you don't know Satan's Fingers check 'em out here. The album will be mastered by Sami Sänpäkkilä and released by Äänetön Records hopefully soon.

The album was recorded on a four track cassette recorded by Satan's Fingers' guitarist Ville. No phantom power in those old decks so it was dynamic microphones all the way. Ville did a good job and on some songs only three channels were used. That's what I would call a minimalistic approach! Mixing four tracks was a pleasure.

My philosophy is that when starting a new project I always have to learn something new. I try to find a new angle or a new approach to new projects. That way I don't repeat myself and I always find something new to learn. Mixing Satan's Fingers taught me a lot about using lofi outboard effects. The mixing was done in-the-box with Pro Tools 8 but I reamped bunch of guitar pedals for some wacky effects. I highly recommend this approach to anyone who feels that doing mixing in-the-box is boring. It

Here's how I set up a channel for effects in this project:
Soundcard line out -> Passive Di-Box -> Wacky guitar pedal effects -> Passive Di-Box -> Mic Pre amp -> Soundcard line in

I recorded the effects on a new track so I didn't have to worry about the settings of the pedals later on.
The passive di-box is crucial when reamping stuff out from the computer! Otherwise the line out signal will be way too hot for the pedals. Nasty distortion will happen.

Anyways, enought tech talk. I'll post some music samples when the record is released!
